Various ferry companies offer services from France to Ireland. Amongst them are Stena Line, Brittany Ferries and Irish Ferries
The route we took
On day one of our journey we were travelling from Fürth in Germany via Belgium to a place called Saint-Étienne-du-Rouvray in France.
Total distance travelled by car on day one was 938 km.
We spent one night at a hotel in Saint-Étienne-du-Rouvray (near Rouen) located quite closely to where we were travelling along.
The drive on day two was actually very short only. From Saint-Étienne-du-Rouvray where we had spent the night it was only 247 km to the harbour of Cherbourg-Octeville.
The ferry we were booked on was the “Stena Horizon”. It was due to leave at 15:00 local time. Check in was about to close one hour before that so we had planned to arrive at least 2 hours before at the Cherbourgh-Octeville harbour.
The travel time on the overnight ferry from Cherbourg in France to Rosslare in Ireland was about 19 hours.
On day three our last part of the trip took us from Rosslare which is locate in the south east of Ireland 308 km to the south west. The place we were heading to is called Rossdohan.
Total distance travelled by car was: 1493 km
Lessons learned from the trip
If there is one main lesson learned from the trip it is this one: Pack less than you think you could fit into your car.
During the three day drive you but especially your children will
start to unpack and move things around. The backpack with things for the
journey might fit between the feet or under the passenger seat when you
start. But it won’t while you are in the middle of your journey. After
every stop or break it gets harder to put everything, including your
children back into the car. Things tend to expand.
A good tip to consider might be using a rooftop box, especially for the lightweight but bulky stuff.
